Qatar market weakens slightly
Qatar: The Doha-based Qatar Exchange failed to jump on the recovery bandwagon in the GCC on Wednesday as its benchmark declined to 8,176.74 (off 0.10%). The Gulf state's second bank Commercial Bank of Qatar, known as CBQ, declined 1.99% to close at QR74.00. Earlier in the day, CBQ announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent for a strategic outsourcing partnership with Tata Consultancy Services "to set-up a regional shared services centre which will deliver integration and efficiencies for the Bank." Under this partnership, Tata will manage the IT platforms and back-office processing services with the objective to reduce operational costs for CBQ. Qatalum expansion on schedule
Qatar: Sven Richard Brandtzaeg, chief executive of Norsk Hydro's Qatar joint venture, Qatalum has said productivity at the smelter plant has exceeded previous estimates, Reuters has reported. "We are actually running on a higher power level than what we had planned and therefore we can get more metal from each cell," he said. The 50-50 venture with Qatar Petroleum, launched in 2009, has a design capacity of 585,000 tonnes of primary aluminium. Qatar set to award $3bn worth of contracts for World Cup city
Qatar: Essa Mohammed Ali Kaldari, chief executive of Lusail Real Estate Development, a state-owned Qatari firm building a new city in time for the 2022 soccer World Cup, has unveiled plans to award about $3bn worth of contracts for roads and infrastructure over the next year, Bloomberg has reported. Lusail City, which will have 200,000 residents and capacity to accommodate twice that many people, is scheduled to be completed by 2019, Kaldari said. Qatar plans mega water reservoir
Qatar: Qatar plans to build a QR10bn ($2.75bn) reservoir capable of holding seven days' worth of fresh water in case its giant desalination plants that supply 99% of the country's water fail, Gulf Times has reported, citing people familiar with the project.
